For more than four decades, Yohji Yamamoto has made a language out of contradiction — black and light, severity and sensuality, structure and collapse. Since his Paris debut in 1981, his uncompromising vision has reshaped the possibilities of clothing, challenging fashion’s ideas of beauty, proportion and permanence while leaving an imprint that continues to reverberate across generations.

Yet legacy is the last thing on his mind. At 82, Yamamoto remains fixed on the unknown: on surprise, instinct, danger, luck. “I have to find a way to surprise myself; otherwise I can’t create,” he tells us in the next SP10 cover story.
